Getting started
Most AEP Ohio customers with a Columbus billing address are automatically enrolled. If you've received a Clean Energy Columbus welcome letter or enrollment notice, your electricity is already 100% clean — no action is required.
You can confirm your enrollment by checking your AEP Ohio bill. Look for the "Generation/Supply" section — if the supplier is listed as AEP Energy and the rate matches the current CEC rate, you're enrolled. Learn how to read your bill →
Residential and small commercial AEP Ohio customers with a Columbus service address are eligible. If you live within Columbus city limits and receive electricity service through AEP Ohio, you most likely qualify.
Some customers may not be eligible, including those already enrolled with another competitive supplier, certain large commercial accounts, or those who have previously opted out. Check eligibility details →
Enrollment is simple. Visit AEP Energy's enrollment page to check eligibility and sign up online, or call 866-856-5654 to enroll by phone. The process takes less than 5 minutes.
You can opt out at any time with absolutely no fees or penalties. Contact AEP Energy at 877-726-0214 or visit CleanEnergyColumbus.org. Once processed, you'll be returned to AEP Ohio's standard generation supply service.
You can also rejoin the program at a later time. Opt out or rejoin →
Your bill & savings
The current CEC supply rate is 10.01¢/kWh for the Jun 2026–May 2027 contract year. AEP Ohio's standard Price to Compare is currently 10.97¢/kWh — meaning CEC participants save approximately 0.96¢ per kilowatt-hour, or roughly $115 per year for a household using 1,000 kWh/month.
In 5 out of 6 contract years since the program launched, CEC has delivered a lower rate than AEP Ohio's standard Price to Compare. The Jun 2021–May 2022 term was the only period where CEC was slightly above the standard rate (by ~0.30¢/kWh). Every subsequent year has produced savings.
CEC's fixed-rate structure also means you're protected from mid-year rate changes that affect AEP Ohio's variable standard offer.
Your bill still comes from AEP Ohio. The only change you'll notice is in the "Generation/Supply" section — the supplier name will show AEP Energy and the rate will reflect the CEC rate instead of AEP Ohio's standard offer. Everything else — delivery charges, taxes, line items — remains the same.
About the clean energy
Yes. Every kilowatt-hour of electricity supplied through the program is matched with a renewable energy certificate (REC) from a qualifying clean energy source. RECs are the standard US mechanism for verifying and tracking renewable electricity generation.
Ohio-based solar and wind projects — including Atlanta Farms Solar in Pickaway County and Emerson Creek Wind in Huron and Erie Counties — are an important part of the clean energy mix that makes this possible.
Ohio-based projects are a meaningful part of the clean energy mix — but not the exclusive source. The program actively supports growing Ohio-based renewable capacity because a more local energy supply is a more resilient one. Growing in-state clean energy is part of what drives Columbus's 100% clean energy goal.
No. AEP Ohio continues to own and maintain the local wires that deliver electricity to your home, respond to outages, and manage your account. The program only changes your electricity supply source — not delivery. For outages, continue to contact AEP Ohio as you normally would.
